“Supporters Unite for Inclusive Education: Ludhiana Campaign on World Down Syndrome Day 2024”

Today, on World Down Syndrome Day, a beacon of hope shines brightly as advocates gather to champion the cause of inclusivity and equality for individuals with Down Syndrome. Dr. Neelam Sodhi, a visionary leader and founder member of Ashirwad NICPA, alongside Mrs. Preeti Jain, a dedicated parent, led an inspiring awareness campaign at the Mini Secretariat.

With the theme “End The Stereotypes,” this year’s campaign aims to debunk misconceptions surrounding individuals with Down Syndrome. It emphasizes that these individuals are not only educable and trainable but also immensely capable of becoming valuable contributors to our city’s culture and economy, given the right opportunities and support.

During the campaign, the group had the privilege of meeting with the esteemed mam DC, Ludhiana, where Vandit Jain, a shining example of this potential, presented welcome flowers. Vandit, a student with Down Syndrome and an alumnus of Drishti Dr. R.C Jain Innovative Public School, runs his own entrepreneurial venture called ‘Just Clay’, showcasing the remarkable capabilities of individuals with Down Syndrome when given the opportunity.

During the campaign, the group had the privilege of meeting with the esteemed mam DC, Ludhiana, where they presented a letter highlighting some critical concerns:

1. Discrimination in Education: Individuals with Down Syndrome are often unjustly rejected or expelled from schools, citing their perceived inability to keep up with the material. This denies them the fundamental right to mainstream education.

2. Lack of Skill Training and Employment Opportunities: Despite their capabilities, there is a significant shortage of skill training programs and a complete absence of gainful employment opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome. Employers are not following directives that would ensure their hiring in roles they are well-suited for.

Dr. Sodhi and Mrs. Preeti Jain passionately expressed that there are remarkable young individuals with Down Syndrome who are unable to fulfil their potential due to societal assumptions. They emphasized that believing in their abilities is the first step towards creating a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive.

This day was marked by a firm belief that when you believe someone is capable, you’ll take the necessary steps to help them achieve their goals. This often results in them surpassing what was initially thought possible.
